Before the invention of the modern clock in the early 1800's every one relied on sundials to tell the time. Most churches and manor houses had sundials engraved on their south facing walls. Many of these can still be seen today.
'Portable sundials' like this, were available to the very few and many young "bucks" carried portable sundials which were seen as the "Rolex" of the era.
We have produced a genuine reproduction of one of these eighteenth century portable sundials; it is a full working model complete with a compass and calibrated to work in the UK in both summer and winter.
The hour plate is marked in Arabic numerals from 5am to 7pm (like the one illustrated) and shows our British Summer time. On our reproduction a second ring is marked in Roman numerals (VI, VII and so on) and shows winter or solar time
Point the sundial to the north using the built in compass.The sun shines on the hour plate and the gnomon (the string between the two plates) casts a shadow marking off the time.
